Reading time: 1 minute

Aside from giving you a nice lift every morning, did you know coffee also can help keep you mentally sharp? It is well known that coffee provides an increasing amount of health benefits to the body and the brain is no stranger to the contributions that coffee provides to help it perfom to the best of its abilities. With many articles and blogs circulating touting the health benefits associated with coffee, we are here to deliver you 3 ways coffee can affect the brain in a positive way:

1. May prevent the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause to Dementia. With no cure, Alzheimer causes memory loss and other behavioral functions, but studies have found that a moderate consumption of coffee may help prevent Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia before the occurance of the disease. So drink a cup a day!

2. Boost brain function by Increasing Alertness and Enhancing Memory

It’s about to get technical! The brain contains adenosine (a neurotransmitter), and adenosine increases neuronal firing in the brain. Coffee contains caffeine, which acts as an adenosine - reseptor antagonist to help you stay awake. Though that may be more complicated than some of us wanted to read, in simpler terms: caffeine is the main active ingredient in coffee, and it stimulates the central nervous system. Adenosine is a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep, but once caffeine is present in the brain it prevents adenosine from slowing us down, which causes us to stay active and alert. Simple enough, right?!

3. Makes us Feel Good!

Coffee stimulates dopamine levels in our brain, which causes us to be happier. So, if you are feeling down and need a quick smile grab your favorite cup of coffee and enjoy!
